The SOAR Mile was back for the fourth year in a row on Friday 2nd August, returning to the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park for a night of twelve 1 Mile races. In the process seeing over one hundred PBs run, many a trackside beer drunk, a new World Record set and a lightning fast 4:01 mile clocked.
Two-time SOAR Men’s Elite Mile Runner-Up and former World Championship 1500m competitor Lewis Moses kept the crowd informed and entertained in equal measure on the microphone. Whilst Tim Soar ensured the party atmosphere was kept alive with the latest SOAR X Mile Playlist.
As the trackside party atmosphere grew from one race to the next, so did the pace of the racing. By Race 6 we had our first sub-5 of the night, and by Race 8 we had a new World Record - Clare Elms stopping the clock at 5:10:35, to lower her own previous best in the Women’s v55 category by 2 seconds.
2017 victor Revee Walcott-Nolan returned to secure the Women’s Elite title once more, recording a time of 4:37:30 with a stylish, front-running performance. Yasmin Goater (4:53:63) and Rose Penfold (5:02:66) completed the podium, both via PB performances.
The most exciting race of all was saved until last, with the SOAR Men’s Elite Mile providing a fitting end to the night’s proceedings. Pace maker Ben Harding took the lead pack of four to 809m in a time of 2:01, bang on pace for a sub-4 clocking. However the fabled 3:59 wasn’t to be, with Dom Brown crossing the line in a still mightily impressive 4:0:97, closely followed by Josh Carr in 4:04:08 and Kieran Clements in 4:05:54.
Thanks to all who raced, spectated and officiated, making it another night to live long in the memory.
