SOAR LAYERING GUIDE
Cold-weather running performance relies on a cohesive layering system.
Baselayers manage moisture, mid layers provide breathable insulation, and outer shells block external elements. When selected correctly for the conditions and output, these three layers adapt continuously to keep you moving efficiently through winter training.
The Base Layer
Sitting directly against the skin, base layers form the foundation of an effective cold-weather system. They work through active moisture management, drawing sweat away from the body while trapping warm air close to the skin.
Selecting the right base layer depends on your effort level and conditions. For high-exertion training or race pace, lightweight, high-wicking options like the Race Base or Merino Silk Base are optimal. On lower-intensity days or in deep cold, thermal-weight options such as the Thermal Top or Silk Base provide enhanced insulation.
The Mid Layer
Worn between a baselayer and an outer shell, a mid layer traps body heat while allowing excess moisture and warmth to escape during sustained efforts. In mild or dry conditions, a mid layer can also serve as your outermost piece.
Choosing a mid layer depends to intensity and temperature. The Tempo Top is ideal for fast running sessions and milder winter days, using synthetic yarns to maximise wicking and ventilation. In lower temperatures, warmer options like the Hooded WoolTech Top offer higher thermal capacity while retaining temperature control due to natrual fibres.
The Shell
Your outer layer is the barrier against adverse conditions, designed to be worn over a base or mid layer. Depending on the weather, a shell provides windproofing, water resistance, or complete rain protection. While not required for every run, it is an essential piece when conditions deteriorate.
Our softshell jackets are highly versatile protection for variable weather. Engineered to repel light to moderate rain and block wind, while offering maximum breathability. Lastly, our hardshells offer uncompromising protection against severe weather. Fully waterproof construction engineered to keep rain out during prolonged exposure.
